Tech Info

Thirteen Lube Laws

1) The worst thing you can do to an engine is start it. That 70-90 percent of all the wear and tear in an engine occurs on start up is a fact.

2) Short hops, which don't warm oil to operating temperature, are as hard on engines as over-heating.

3) There are a few basic types of oil. For reciprocating engines they are castor, conventionally refined petroleum, hydro-cracked petroleum, and synthetic.

4) Additives are what make oil work. So called multi-viscosity oils are rated such because of them.

5) Additives are what wear out in oils. And they are what keep things from wearing out.

6) 212F degrees is considered the ideal temperature for oil, since it will boil off moisture.

7) At a constant 240F degrees you cut the oils service life in half.

8) Every 12F degrees above 240F, cuts life in half again.

9) Air-cooled engines operate at temperatures as high as 350 degrees.

10) So-called straight-weight or single grade motor oils went out with flathead engines. Use them at your own risk.(See items 1-9)

11) Most modern multi-grade SAE-rated oils have an EPA imposed cap on the added amounts of certain additives to prevent clogged catalytic converters. 20W50 isn't subject to these limitations.

12) Defining a given oil's performance by chemical analysis does not tell the whole story.

13) The frequent changing of both oil and filter are still the best insurance for engine longevity.

We recommend only the best products available.
